leave me with some kind of proof

Black and white together is such a classic. For some reason, black tops with white bottoms are much less common than the vice versa. Since I didn't feel like wearing a white tee with black pants again, I ended up leaving the house in this.
A very elderly woman told me she liked my outfit. She even told my photographer that I was a very lovely girl. I was bit surprised by her compliment, since I wouldn't have guessed that someone 75+ would get my style. It brighten my day!

Also Happy Halloween! I'm actually dressing up at work as a farm girl who has been bitten by a zombie, and is just about to turn. Since I work with awesome people, there will also be a flash dance of Thriller. Hope everyone's halloween is fun-filled!

look at the stars, look how they shine for you

I am happy to see the return of different skirt lengths. Now don't get me wrong, I love wearing minis, but there is something quite feminine I find about midi and maxi skirts. I picked up this skirt on sale at Zara sometime in March and it has done me well over the summer and into fall.

I think a brooch pinned between a fully buttoned collared shirt is a fun way to add a little sparkle to an outfit. This brooch is pretty old and I totally forgot about it until I found it in a box of old jewellery recently. Hooray for "shopping" my closet!

'cause there's a side to you that i never knew, never knew

I can definitely appreciate the quality in high-end items but I have no shame in admitting I enjoy bargain hunting. I'm one of those people that get excited by a good deal. This red corduroy skirt was only $12 or $14 from Forever21. There definitely are pieces worth investing in, however it is still possible to look polished without spending a ton.
I wore this to a lazy afternoon brunch at Eggsmart, so it was all about comfortable casual. Anyone else share my love for breakfast foods at all times of the day? I like making eggs for dinner regularly.

J Loves: VAWK Spring/Summer 2012

Sonny Fong is, by far, one of my favourite Canadian designers and I look forward to seeing VAWK every season. And like the previous seasons, his spring/summer 2012 collection doesn't disappoint. The above six looks are my picks, my fave being the dress on the top left. Look at the gold details on that one! I love how his aesthetic is always clean and feminine. Also, bonus points for model diversity! I love how the girls he chose were a mix of ethnicities, age and size.

On a side note, I've actually seen him twice downtown (with my cousin, who is also a fan!), but we chickened out in saying hi. If I see him again I will definitely get a pic with him next time, haha.

on ne peut pas fabriquer la vérité

This one won't be for everyone.
Recently, I've taken a liking to big baggy sweaters, the bigger the better. The chilly weather makes me want to hide in cozy thick knits. Until I can find my perfect giant sweater, I've developed a interest in raiding boys' closets. This time I've "borrowed" this Banana Republic men's sweater, and I would love it even more if it was in a Large, rather than a Medium.
I think feminine accessories balance menswear pieces and keeps it from looking too sloppy. Either way, I believe style is all about wearing what you feel like wearing and at the moment, I'm all about the over-sized.

Monday is coming, carpe diem!

writer's block

I am burnt out from a busy week of midterms and school this week. So I'm not sure of what to write, but I will leave you with a few photos of an outfit taken a few weeks back...When one could wear sandals and not get weird looks about it from strangers.

On the plus side, I don't have school next week! I'm hoping to use my time wisely to study, relax, recharge and organize my insanely messy closet. I am a total hoarder when it comes to clothes, anyone else out there like me?

in this light, little to hide

I fully embrace bright and bold colours. They are a great counterbalance to the gloomy fall weather that we have been experiencing lately.
Funny story about this sweater. I work right above a mall, so I have easy access to shopping! I grabbed this sweater on lunch one day because the office was freezing. A couple co-workers asked me where I got it and within a week, I saw two other people wear the same sweater! Thankfully, the sweater is such a basic enough that you won't look like twin-ies if more than one person is wearing it on the same day.
On a side note, I love this mural based on Hokusai Katsushika's The Great Wave. Too bad I blended in too well to have it as the main background, maybe next time.

this time I'm not leaving without you

IMG_5437

I don't know where or when it started, but I've been getting into the habit of knotting my tops and maxi skirts sometimes. I especially love doing it to my button-down tops and oversized tees rather than tucking them in. I suppose it's sometimes those extra little things that can change the entire look of an outfit.

still i can't escape the ghost of you

This is a much delayed post for an outfit from late summer. The past weekend's high temperature made me just a bit nostalgic for summer. Anyways, I think it should have come across by now, that I have a laid-back and easy-going mentality about my personal style. (It doesn't have to equate to looking lazy or sloppy.) In every other post, I write something about staple pieces and not thinking too much about what I'm wearing.
This pattern skirt is another one of those staples. It goes with practically everything and instantly adds interest to any outfit. I spotted it from across the store and had to have it. If it is eye-catching from a clothing rack, it most likely will have the same effect on.

M Loves: Lucian Matis Spring/Summer 2012

Designers start sending their Spring/Summer 2012 collection down the runways of LG fashion week next monday. Lucian Matis, who has shown at the Toronto Fashion Week previously, held his "rogue" show last night.

I don't actually follow runway shows very consistently, but I saw pictures from the show this morning and thought I would share some of my favourites.

It's great to see vibrant bright colours return for next year. I think the reason I'm drawn to these three pieces is the basketweave texture. It looks great on its own and paired with contrasting flowy sheer fabric. I think the aqua dress is particularily stunning.

mellow yellow

[scarf: Michael Kors for Holt Renfrew | top: H&M | skirt: Topshop | shoes: Mel by Melissa | bag: See by Chloe]

This skirt was such an unexpected buy for me. When I first saw it, it was everything I wanted in a maxi skirt - sheer and flowy with hidden pockets; everything was great except the colour. I'm not big on wearing yellow, especially mustard. I took it in the fitting room with me anyways and figured if it fit well I could take it home and dye it black. To my surprise, I fell in love with how I looked the colour and the rest is history. Even M was surprised to see me in this colour (as she knows for my strong dislike of mustard yellow)!

now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend

When I'm suffering from I-have-nothing-to-wear syndrome, I follow this formula;
looking put together = some sort of top + cardigan + pants.
This particular time, I grabbed for a few neutral items. Neutrals are effortless and pair great together. The key to avoid looking too drab is to make sure there is variety in the tones and details to add interest.

Happy turkey-feasting fellow Canucks!

Here's a glimpse at what my typical work-appropriate attire is like. These photos were actually taken a few weeks back, but I haven't gotten around to posting them until now. I spent my summer interning in a fashion environment where the dress code was professional (but not corporate). Surprisingly enough, I actually really enjoyed getting dressed like this almost every morning!

but i'm here in my mold, i am here in my mold

Thanks to the the duo from clothesencounters on youtube, I was inspired to try out a red lip look for the first time! The close-up in the above picture makes the shade look brighter, but it is truer to colour in the other shots. I can see why it is such a classic look. A red lip really does brighten your face and add colour to outfits. Anyways it's Monday, so I'll keep it short.

Hope everyone has a good week!
